The Taste of the Vineyard, or “The Taste” as it is affectionately known, is easily the most anticipated event on Martha’s Vineyard. It’s a grand 2-night affair that kicks-off the Island’s social season in early June each year.
Now in its 31st year, the Taste was started began as a fund raiser for the restoration of the newly acquired Flying Horses Carousel. More potluck than posh, it was a small event in 1986, but has grown immensely in popularity and participation over the years.
The Taste is now the most important annual fundraiser for the Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Trust, a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization. By attending, you are supporting the preservation of these landmark buildings like the Flying Horses Carousel, Alley’s General Store and the Old Whaling Church. The proceeds of this event are used to restore and maintain the twenty historic landmarks in the Trust’s stewardship.
On Thursday evening, we welcome over 1200 attendees to the Taste of the Vineyard Gourmet Stroll. In the week leading up, more than 15,000 square feet of tents spring up on the sprawling lawns of the Dr. Daniel Fisher House. More than 90 participants will gather in this vast series of tents. The Island’s finest restaurants, caterers and beverage purveyors can all be found in the same place at the same time for this one night only.
This is your chance to sample the Vineyard’s best food, wine and hand-crafted beers as you catch up with old friends after a long, cold winter. Each guest picks up a complimentary wine glass and buffet tray at the entrance then noshes and sips their way through the amazing displays of tasty treats and fine beverages.
After you’ve had a “Taste” from more than 90 outstanding fine food and beverage participants, you can dance the night away with the hottest band around – Jerry Bennett and the Sultans of Swing. And, for great memories of the evening, photographer Joe Mikos will be there.
The Gourmet Stroll is like a huge family reunion – so many familiar faces – of Islanders and visitors alike. The Stroll has been a sell-out event every year since 1999.
